RAMBLERS
What You'll Need &
Guidance Notes
What you'll need
- Walking boots - we recommend boots as they give ankle support and
keep your feet dry. However, we don't normally expect you to rush out and buy a
pair of boots for your first couple of walks. Trainers may well suffice on fine
summer days but on winter walks, boots are essential due to mud and slippery
conditions.
- Walking socks - we also suggest that you have good walking socks.
Some folk wear two pairs of socks, a thin cotton pair inside their walking
socks. However, modern walking socks can be worn on their own. It's personal
choice.
- Rucksack - you will need to carry your packed lunch, plenty of fluid
(hot drink in the winter), sweater, waterproof jacket plus any personal items.
Rucksacks are not waterproof, so it's as well to have a plastic liner inside.
You can use a black refuse bag but liners are cheap to buy from walking shops.
At first, see if you can borrow a rucksack.
- Walking gear - there's lots of choice at varying prices. Ramblers do
tend to go out in all sorts of weathers, and on rainy days a good waterproof
jacket is essential. As time goes on, should you want to, you can build up your
walking wardrobe, e.g. waterproof trousers, gaiters. When walking, most people
prefer layers of clothing.
Guidance notes
- All walkers join our groups entirely at their own risk.
- Always carry sufficient food and drink.
- Dress appropriately for the weather - it may be sunny and warm when
you start walking but be aware the weather changes.
- Members who accept lifts to walk starts should ensure drivers fuel
costs are reimbursed.
- Should you decide to join the group at the actual walk start rather
than meeting at Addlestone or Egham car parks, you must 'phone the walks leader
in advance.
- If you need a 'comfort stop' during a walk, please tell someone and
do not just disappear into the bushes!
